How to Connect AVEVA InTouch HMI with Siemens SINAMICS Drives




AVEVA InTouch HMI is a powerful software that enables you to visualize and control your industrial processes from a single interface. It supports a wide range of communication drivers that allow you to connect with various devices and systems. One of them is the Siemens Atsddedm Driver, which is designed for integrating Siemens SINAMICS drives into your automation network.

SINAMICS is a family of frequency converters that can be used for speed and torque control of electric motors. They offer high performance, flexibility and efficiency for various applications. With the Siemens Atsddedm Driver, you can easily configure, monitor and control your SINAMICS drives from AVEVA InTouch HMI.


In this article, we will show you how to set up the communication between AVEVA InTouch HMI and Siemens SINAMICS drives using the Siemens Atsddedm Driver. We will assume that you have already installed AVEVA InTouch HMI and Siemens SINAMICS Startdrive Commissioning Software on your computer.


Step 1: Configure the SINAMICS Drive




The first step is to configure the SINAMICS drive using the SINAMICS Startdrive Commissioning Software. This software is part of the Totally Integrated Automation Portal (TIA Portal), which is an engineering software for industrial automation. You can use it to create and edit projects, assign parameters, test functions and diagnose errors for your SINAMICS drives.


To configure the SINAMICS drive, follow these steps:


  • Launch the TIA Portal and create a new project or open an existing one.



  • Add a SINAMICS drive to your project by selecting it from the device catalog or by scanning the network.



  • Select the drive and open its properties window.



  • Go to the "General" tab and enter a name and an address for the drive. The address should be unique within the network.



  • Go to the "Communication" tab and select "PROFINET IO" as the communication protocol.



  • Go to the "PROFINET IO" tab and enter a device name and a subnet mask for the drive. The device name should be unique within the network.



  • Go to the "Telegram configuration" tab and select a telegram type for the drive. The telegram type defines the data exchange between the drive and the controller. You can choose from standard or user-defined telegrams.



  • Save and compile your project.



  • Download your project to the drive by clicking on the "Online access" button and selecting "Download to device".



Step 2: Configure the Siemens Atsddedm Driver




The next step is to configure the Siemens Atsddedm Driver in AVEVA InTouch HMI. This driver allows you to communicate with Siemens devices that support PROFINET IO protocol. You can use it to read and write data from/to your SINAMICS drives.


To configure the Siemens Atsddedm Driver, follow these steps:


  • Launch AVEVA InTouch HMI and open your application or create a new one.



  • Go to "Special" > "Configure" > "I/O Servers".



  • Select "Atsddedm" from the list of available I/O servers and click on "Add".



  • Enter a name and a topic for the I/O server. The name should be unique within your application. The topic can be any string that identifies your communication channel.



  • Select "TCP/IP" as the network type and enter the IP address of your computer as the node name.



  • Select "OK" to save your settings.



  • Select your I/O server from the list and click on "Configure".



  • Select "Add Device" to add a new device to your I/O server.



  • Enter a name and an address for your device. The name should be unique within your I/O server. The address should match the device name of your SINAMICS drive that you configured in Step 1.



  • Select "OK" to save your settings.



  • Select your device from the list and click on "Configure".
